This study assessed the nutritional status of type II diabetic patients attending the Diabetic Clinic of the Medical Outpatient of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. 100 patients were selected for the study which comprises of 58 females and 42 males. 42% were aged 60-69 years, 22% between the ages of 50-59 years while 14% were aged 40-49 years. Food intake was evaluated using repeated 24hr dietary recall. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) and 2hr postprandial glucose (2HPP) values were determined in all patients. Anthropometric measurements of height and weight were also taken. Nutrient intake was calculated from Food Composition Tables and evaluated using RDA. Values of FBG and 2HPP were compared to standard values and levels of obesity determined using BMI values. The patients had poor glycemic control with 64% having the FBG value above 105mg/mmol and 93% having the 2HPP value above 120mg/mmol. The mean energy intake of the male patients was higher than that of the female patients likewise their protein intake which was found to decrease with increase in age except for age 60-69 years where the intake increases rapidly. The female diabetic patients had more calcium intake than the male patients while 20.7% of the female had their iron intake below the RDA. Based on BMI, 41% were overweight, 21% and 5% had type I obesity and type II obesity, respectively. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that despite the dietary counseling offered to the patients on the clinic days more than half of them still had poor glycemic control, overweight and obese coupled with limited physical activity.
