Abstract: The term diabetes mellitus describes a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Diabetes may be due to defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The effects of diabetes mellitus include long-term damage, dysfunction and failure of various organs. People with diabetes are at increased risk of cardiovascular, peripheral vascular and cerebrovascular disease. Controlling plasma blood glucose may help in reducing the risk of diabetes. Several studies have proved that cinnamon may be helpful in improving glycemic control. However, not all studies have shown positive effects of cinnamon which depends on type of cinnamon, dosage of cinnamon, type of subjects and the medication they are prescribed. In conclusion, intake of cinnamon is associated with a statistically significant decrease in fasting plasma glucose, postprandial glucose, serum lipid profile and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C). |
