DEVELOPING THE SPIRIT OF CREATIVITY IN UPPER BASIC EDUCATION LEVEL STUDENTS THROUGH EFFECTIVE MATHEMATICS EDUCATION IN ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA
Creativity is said to be essential for any individual who is expected to function well in today’s world of science and technology. However, for one to be creative, he may need to be propelled and possibly encouraged. This paper therefore looked at those variables that will enhance speedy development of mathematical creativity in Upper Basic Education UBE Level (UBEL) students. Using a survey design, a sample of 200 (108 male and 92 female) students of Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu was used for the study. Two research questions were asked and answered using descriptive statistic of mean and standard deviation. Potentially Creative Thinkers in Mathematics Questionnaire (PCTMQ), a 22-item instrument developed by the researchers, was validated by three experts in mathematics education and two experts in measurement and evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach Alpha which gave a reliability index of 0.83. Recommendation such as encouraging mathematics teachers to adopt methods that will encourage the spirit of creativity in their mathematics classroom was made among others. It was therefore concluded that for speedy development of mathematics creativity, the mathematics teachers need to more often than not embark on personal capacity development.
