PROMOTING STEM EDUCATION THROUGH UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH, INTERNSHIPS, AND OTHER PROGRAM INVOLVEMENTS

Abstract:
Educational programs are used to provide necessary knowledge to elevate skill needed in a group of participants to be assigned to a particular task that later joins the workforce. Additional support is required for the participants to be successful in these programs in both contents and timely completion. A similarly designed and well-tailored program can promote STEM programs among high school and college students as educators constantly find ways and means to do the same in almost every US academic institution. This paper attempts to shed light on a program undertaken at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), Laredo, Texas in years 2009 and 2010, known as the STEM Recruitment, Retention, and Graduation (STEM-RRG) program with an emphasis on the extent of such educational intervention. Student peer-evaluation results are used as an indication to measure how successful this project component was in achieving desired outcomes.
