ON THE MEASUREMENT OF CORRELATION LENGTHS OF LONG-LIVED AND PRIORITIZED VIDEO STREAMS
Kazumasa Oida
Abstract:
The inference of user impatience with quality-of-experience (QoE) degradation due to a shortage of transmission bandwidth is an important research issue. Impatience affects statistical features of video streams if users who have experienced QoE degradation abort some of the streams before they are completed. One of these features is the correlation length (the time until the autocorrelation function decreases to a small value), which is shortened by the user behavior. However, if video traffic is split and merged at several points in the network, then it is sometimes not easy to collect all necessary traffic data for the measurement. Moreover, since video streams tend to be long-lived and prioritized, there are cases in which collection can be simplified. The present paper considers video traffic carried over a VPN tunnel that consists of a number of separate transmission paths. The amount of change in the correlation length can be measured using traffic data collected at one of the paths. When video traffic is mixed with elastic traffic over the tunnel, the elastic traffic has almost no effect on the correlation length of the tunnel traffic if the video traffic has a higher priority or has a fixed amount of VPN bandwidth and the average lifetime of the video streams is long.
