Abstract: This research examines
the correlation between art affinity and Geometry scores and Algebra scores.
Gender differences were also researched. The study consisted of 112 students enrolled
in Geometry and Advanced Algebra (second year Algebra) in a large urban school
in the
Midwest
during the 2007-2008 school year. The majority of the students were eleventh
graders (about 46%), followed by tenth graders (about 38%), then by ninth and
twelfth graders (each at 8%). Fifty-five males and 57 females were used in the
study. The majority of the students were Caucasian. The average GPA of the
participants is about 2.78. There was no correlation found in the data that was
collected. Therefore, it may be concluded that there is no significant
correlation between affinity to art and mathematical achievement in Geometry or
in Algebra.
