PHYSICAL CHARACTERISATION OF BAFOUSSAM (CAMEROON) SOILS FOR THE FOUNDATIONS

Abstract: Studies carried out allowed determining physical properties of Bafoussam soils. The adequate understanding of these physical properties permits one to classify soils and to foresee their behaviour when subjected to loads. Studies conducted have revealed that the soils of Bafoussam (Cameroon) are found to belong to the category of fine soils. The soils are found to have an essentially plastic character as they have an average plasticity index of 28.61% with a standard deviation of 7.69. Materials studied are of high water content with an average of 37.12%. The dry density is low, varying from 1.00g/cm3 to 1.48g/cm3. The soils have a 2.78g/cm3 average density of solid grain, 1.15g/cm3 dry density, 1.44 void ratio and 58.49% porosity. All these qualify the soils to have a macro porous character. These results show that Bafoussam soils yield to substantial settlements. These soils may need a particular attention in their usage as foundation soils. |
