NICKEL WELDABILITY BY MEANS OF HIGH POWER DIODE LASER

Abstract: In this study the feasibility of an high power diode laser (HPDL) welding is evaluated for nominally pure nickel (Ni). Commercial wire-ends were used as samples to join and several process parameters were changed: the laser spot orientation, the laser power and the interaction time. A surface analysis was conducted on the joined samples by means of microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS). Tensile tests were carried out to evaluate the joint rupture load. The weldability of Ni wire-ends depends both on geometrical parameters and microstructural ones. A process map was constructed to correctly compare different processing conditions. A correct weld design cannot be performed if the presence of impurities is not taken into account. After welding, a small amount of silicon (Si) determines the occurrence of dendritic precipitates that can significantly affect the material behavior of the weld zone. |
