Abstract: A quake-triggered tsunami lashed the Island of Penang in Peninsular Malaysia on 26 December 2004 approximately between 1310 and 1345 local time. Using a set of non-linear shallow-water equations governing the motion (in Cylindrical polar coordinate system), we study the effect of different orientations of the tsunami source along the coastline of Penang Island. The tsunami source associated with the Indonesian tsunami 2004 (designated as the original source) and its two different orientations have been applied to study their effects along the coastal belts of Penang Island. The outcomes of the work demonstrate that orientation of the source has a significant effect on the wave heights near the coastline. |
