Abstract: In this paper, we develop a symmetric finite volume
element scheme based on piecewise linear polynomials along characteristics for
three-dimensional convection diffusion problems. An alternating direction
procedure is used to solve the equations arising at each time step. The optimal
-norm error estimates have been proved. A numerical example is given at the end
to show the efficiency of the methods.
