VISUAL THINKING OF MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS
Visual thinking about mathematical concepts can help not only students at the elementary level but also prospective mathematics teachers. Mechanical memorization of many formulas may work for solving some exercises, but students do not necessarily visualize the concrete meaning. Visual clues reveal mathematical concepts behind formulas and encourage students and instructors to apply mathematical thinking toawiderangeofproblems. Theimportanceofusing pictures and diagrams in mathematics education is discussed through examples. Visual thinking is closely related to the model of the learning process.
