The shape of the rotor blades plays a decisive role in determining the overall aerodynamic performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine. The objective of the design methodology is to extract maximum power at the location of placement of the wind turbines. In order to make the household wind turbines more viable and economically feasible, appropriate wind turbines have to be put in place. The work demonstrates the economic advantage of using NREL S822 profile over NACA 4412 profile, by conducting experiment in a wind tunnel using the appropriate wind profiles. An optimization is performed using genetic algorithm code in MATLAB. Comparison is made with the output results of the optimized NACA 4412 blade with NREL S822 profile blade. NACA blades are very widely used in India for small wind turbines. Small wind manufacturers are yet to shift to NREL blades. The paper highlights the importance and power advantage of using NREL blades with respect to maximizing the energy yield of a wind turbine.
