TOWARDS A MODEL FOR E-LEARNING IN NIGERIAN HEIs: LESSONS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF
JOS ICT MATHS INITIATIVE

Abstract: Nigerian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) must prepare scholars to contribute to the global marketplace of ideas. Adopting an appropriate strategy for introducing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for teaching and learning may be as critical as the content developed or shared. In efforts to rapidly introduce technologies for teaching, many universities may adopt models and content developed for, and in, other contexts. While global collaboration should be encouraged, it is critical that Nigerian HEIs work together toward building models to address specific challenges unique to the Nigerian situation. Towards a Model for e-Learning in Nigerian HEIs addresses key challenges in the Nigerian environment by detailing the experience the University of Jos faced in its six-year effort to implement an e-learning initiative in mathematics with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Hewlett Packard, and the World Bank sponsored Science and Technology Education Post-Basic (STEPB) Project. The lessons learnt provide a model for other HEIs. Hence, the significance of this paper lies in its usefulness to Nigerian HEIs seeking to implement their own e-learning initiatives. In sum, this study provides a road map for successful implementation of e-learning initiatives in Nigeria. |
