Abstract: One of the
basic results in the theory of ordinary continued fractions is Lagrange’s
Theorem, that the continued fraction expansions of an irrational number ais
periodic if and only if ais a
quadratic surd. We know that this is not the case for the ring of
polynomials over the rationals. We determine for which uand va quadratic surd over is not periodic.
Keywords and phrases: nonperiodic continued fractions.
