A BINARY TEXT COMPRESSION ALGORITHM BASED ON PARTITIONING

Abstract:
In many wireless, portable and other products, large volume data transmission and intensive computation are carried out as a result of the increasing number of functions built into them. It is therefore necessary to reduce the space occupied by a file in order to increase the effective volume of a storage device as well as the effective bandwidth of a data communication channel. In this paper, an algorithm for compressing a text file consisting of a set of strings of uniform blocklength n in two alphabets is presented. The algorithm is based on partitioning in which a string is first partitioned into two in the ordinary sense, and the set is thereafter partitioned in the abstract algebraic sense. The algorithm is tested using the EBCDIC code as a model set of binary strings. The memory space required by this set has been substantially reduced using the algorithm.
