Abstract: Grain refinement of
low carbon steel S25C has been attempted by torsion deformation and recrystallization. The torsion deformation,
i.e., torsion rupture or interrupt processes, is conducted on smooth specimen
bars of the annealed steel. Recrystallization is performed on the torsion
deformed specimens at and for 1h, 3h and 8h, respectively.
Resultantly,fine-grainedmicrostructures are obtained. Especially the most fine-grained
microstructure with a grain size of about a half of the annealed steel is
observed. It is confirmed that the grain refinement is closely related to the
applied strains as well as the recrystallization conditions. It is also found
that the strengths and the Vickers hardness of the grain refinement processed
specimens are increased, though their ductility is lowered. Effects of the grain
refinement on the mechanical properties of the steel are discussed.
