Abstract: This paper considers the KdV two-layer model for internal waves. The KdV equation has coefficients that depend explicitly on the depth and density of each layer. Internal solitary waves were observed in Lombok Strait from ERS2-SAR images, by Mitnik et al. in [6]. Here, we provide a way how to choose suitable parameters for the KdV two-layer model, in the case of Lombok Strait density. We also compare the equation with the KdV equation for internal wave with continuous density. Wavelength of internal solitary wave in Lombok Strait can be obtained from the measured pixel value of the SAR-images. Hence, we can estimate amplitude and velocity of internal solitary waves in Lombok Strait. We observe that amplitude estimation depends sensitively on the choice of the depth of each layer, whereas velocity estimation depends sensitively on the choice of the density of each layer. |
