IMPLEMENTATION OF FACTS DEVICES IN ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEM FOR AVAILABLE TRANSMISSION CAPABILITY ENHANCEMENT
André Cheukem (Cameroon) and John Mucho Ngundam (Cameroon)
Abstract:
The electrical industry around the world is undergoing a radical paradigm shift towards deregulation and opening of the market for delivery of cheaper energy to the customer; this modification is creating new challenges for the operation of power systems. Flexible Alternative Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) can be used effectively to meet some of these challenges. This paper focuses on the evaluation of the impact of FACTS devices on the Available Transmission Capability (ATC) and its enhancement. Based on the Secure Constrained Optimal Power Flow using Interior Point Method (IPM), which is modified to incorporate FACTS devices, the calculation of Available Transmission Capability (ATC) with FACTS devices is proposed. The method is applied to a practical power system in Southern Power Transmission System of Cameroon.
Keywords and phrases:
FACTS (flexible ac transmission systems), available transmission capability (ATC), electric power deregulation, power flow method.
