THE EFFECT OF HIGHER HARMONICS ON THE BENJAMIN-FEIR INSTABILITY

Abstract:
Interactions of higher harmonics that lead to resonance are explored for a fully nonlinear representation of the Stokes wave on deep water. Laplace’s equation is used to model the inviscid fluid, with nonlinearities captured in the boundary conditions. A disturbance is introduced, represented by a pair of sideband modes, and a perturbation analysis conducted. The interaction between higher harmonics of the primary wave and the sidebands is specified and the contribution of this interaction to unbounded growth is characterized.
