BIVARIATE CHARACTERIZATION OF SHORT-TERM TRAFFIC FLOW USING WAVELET MODULUS MAXIMA

Abstract: This paper introduces the concept of modulus maxima of the wavelet transform to detect the discontinuities on series of volume and occupancy collected from an urban multi-lane signalized arterial. The detected discontinuities are also associated with the prevailing traffic conditions as reflected in the joint consideration of volume and occupancy using a two-stage clustering approach capable to account for the data’s variability. Results indicate that the approach used has defined the boundaries of four distinct traffic states on the volume-occupancy diagram; further, it has successfully identified the onset and offset of congestion, an important addition to current short-term traffic forecasting research. |
