CORRELATION BETWEEN ELECTRONIC ORBITAL ACTIVATION AND SELECTIVE PROPERTIES AND GROWTH OF CARBON NANOTUBES AND RELATED MATERIALS

Stéphane Neuville (France)

Received January 6, 2008

Abstract
Already published different experimental results on achievement of known carbon material types, suggest some correlation between electron orbital properties of grown carbon materials and their specific growth process parameters in terms of associated electronic and thermal thermodynamics. These considerations associated to the geometric aspects of the electronic orbitals and the growth conditions have already shown some perspectives on optimization on some carbon material thin films. We propose in this paper to discuss the extension of this qualitative interpretation model to other carbon materials, where the finer structure of the electronic bands is more complex, such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and nano wires (CNW). The qualitative comparison of various growth processes, and analysis and description of the electronic structures suggest the possibility to predict some results on characterizing measurements, properties and growth process conditions. This can be achieved in adding some considerations on geometrical and spatial aspects of the nucleation and growth mechanisms. It is expected some perspective on optimization on different CNT carbon material growth processes, which may be of interest for their reproducibility, upscalings and selective properties which will be necessary for some predicted applications. Among them, field emission, hydrogen adsorbtion and various mechanical, chemical and optoelectronic applications. Finally, in associating the different discussed points, we suggest the description of some sequences with which ADN would have been synthesized on helicoidal CNT.

Keywords and phrases: electron thermodynamic in carbon materials, selective growth of CNT, physico chemical properties of CNT, ADN synthesis route.
