MODELLING FLUID FLOW IN RECTANGULAR AND TRAPEZOIDAL OPEN CHANNELS
J. K. Kwanza (Kenya), J. M. Nkoroi (Kenya) and M. Kinyanjui (Kenya)
Abstract:
Water logging has been with us for a long time. Man has tried to get rid of this problem by constructing canals and water ways to drain water from the stagnation sites such as pools and dams. All these conduits are called channels. One challenge that is facing engineers today is to design a channel that will convey the maximum amount of discharge efficiently. In this study we look at open channel flow that is a flow where there is an interface of air and water. In this study we consider uniform flow in rectangular and trapezoidal shaped channels. We have considered the effect of velocity and depth as they vary from one point to another. The conservation laws lead to governing equations that are partial differential equations. The partial differential equations are non-linear hence cannot be solved analytically. The finite difference approximation method is used to solve the non-linear differential equations. The results are analyzed using graphs and tables. It is found that for both rectangular and trapezoidal channels, increase in the slope of the channel as well as increase in width of the channel leads to an increase in discharge.
Keywords and phrases:
open channels, discharge, wetted perimeter, finite difference.
