EFFECT OF WORD PROBLEM COMPREHENSION STRATEGY (WPCS) ON THE ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS OF GRADE 6 IN THESUBJECT OF MATHEMATICS
In today’s mathematics classrooms, problem-solving has many effects on a student’s learning. Word problem comprehension is an integral part of all mathematics learning. For many students, difficulties in word problem comprehension stemmed from several areas. Normally, the resistance these students have with word problem comprehension comes from a language barrier, slow learning pace, attention deficit, retention difficulties, abstract reasoning, visual/auditory-processing or perceptual deficits. In order to help students comprehend the given word problems in mathematics effectively, word problem comprehension strategy (WPCS) was devised and implemented in the classroom. The researcher investigated the effectiveness of ‘word problem comprehension strategy’ on the academic achievement of students of Grade 6 in the subject of mathematics. The researcher also analyzed the opinion of students’ with respect to word problem comprehension strategy.
